Kara McKamey's Artist Statement

I have had this undeniable urge to create things.  My grandmother taught me to sew at an early age; and at around nine years old, I would cut up gingham fabric and hand sew aprons for the women most important in my life. They looked like tattered, badly sewn things, but I remember my grandmother wearing them proudly while she was cooking dinner.

I discovered pottery during my college years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since then, it has cycled in and out of my life allowing me to take turns being a student, a teacher, and a craftswoman of clay. I've always been mesmerized by the potter's wheel, and spend most of my studio time “throwing” pots.

The School House Pottery Studio has been so important to my life in Vermont. I have never experienced a studio that gives so much freedom to its students and patrons. It has become a rare place that I can find myself being a student, a teacher, and a craftswoman… simultaneously... all in one place.

My work can be anything: it can be whimsical or serious, functional or decorative, high end or low end, one of a kind or part of a set. I am always interested in the possibilities of clay… not the limitations of the mind. I never question if I can make ten mugs that look exactly alike, or a vase that is two feet tall… with clay, I simply find myself sitting down at the potter's wheel, imagining a form, and saying to myself: "yes, I can do that"...
